When it comes to website hosting, iPage is one of the best options in both pricing and features. We recommend iPage for hosting small business websites and blogs.

For Joomla websites, iPage is a great choice. As mentioned before, we only recommend iPage for small websites. If you are planning to create a forum, social site, news site or other type of website with Joomla that require high server resources, iPage is not your host.

iPage is perfect, if you want to create a small website for your company or run a small blog. Setting up a Joomla website with iPage is quick and easy. Their control panel is easy to use, Joomla can be installed to your website in just few clicks.

Setting up a professional email account for your website is also very simple.

Joomla Installation Error on iPage

While installing and testing Joomla on iPage, I’ve run into the following error:

Your server does not meet the necessary requirements for this script: ERROR.

ipage-joomla-install-error-php-version

The PHP version on my account was 5.3, which is an old version. Joomla 3 requires at least PHP 5.6 version. After updating the PHP version, I was able to install Joomla 3.8 without problems.

As you can see, Joomla is sensitive to the version of PHP that is running on the server, so it is important to choose a host, that support the PHP version Joomla requires.

Luckily at iPage, you can choose from different PHP versions.

What Joomla Versions Does iPage Support?

At the time of writing iPage allows installing Joomla 3 to their server automatically. To be more specific, I tested it with Joomla 3.8.10 version.

While Joomla 4 is still in development, and has no production version yet, this version can’t be installed automatically through iPage’s system.

Older Joomla versions (1.0, 1.5, 2.5) can’t be installed automatically either. You can still setup these version manually, although is not recommended for production websites. Joomla.org does not support these versions anymore.

What about PHP version? Joomla 4 requires at least PHP 7.0 version. The good news is that at iPage, you can set the PHP version you need, including PHP 7.0 and 7.1 versions. You can learn more about iPage PHP version in our other tutorial.

iPage Joomla Hosting Alternatives

When it comes to small websites, iPage is one of the best options. However the resources offered with their Essential Plan (shared hosting) might not be enough to smoothly run a medium sized Joomla website.

If you are looking for a more powerful Joomla hosting, I highly recommend the following hosting providers:

All the above mentioned hosting companies offer one-click Joomla installation. They are more expensive than iPage, but provide more server resources for your Joomla website. Unlike iPage, these companies also offer various shared hosting plans, so you can upgrade hosting as your website grows.

At iPage you can only upgrade to VPS, once you outgrow your shared plan. VPS plans are more expensive, than shared plans and also require some knowledge in configuring a web server.

Conclusion

iPage is the perfect solution if you want to quickly setup a Joomla website on a budget. If you are planning to grow your site, iPage might not be the best choice for you. For a company presentation site, local business website, small blog that receives around a 100-200 page views daily, iPage is good enough.

I really hope, this quick guide has helped you figure out whether iPage is good for your Joomla site or you might need to look for something else.
