Prove Your Value – A good guest blogger keeps the target audience first. They tell the blog owner what they can bring to the table and how their content will benefit the audience. It is extremely important to include what kind of value you will provide at the start of the pitch. You have to prove that you can help the perspective blog owner with something and definitely don’t include how they can help you.

Research The Blog You’re Pitching – Most blog owners don’t want hundreds and thousands of writers pitching them on the daily, which is why they might hide their guest post section and guidelines. You should look through each blog you want to pitch and find their guidelines by yourself. But if you’re really good at writing, you don’t need a guideline to know what is necessary to the blog you’re pitching. You should be able to get the feel of what kind of articles work for them.

Respect the Editors Time – Just about any blog that’s worth pitching, has a busy editorial calendar. It takes plenty of time for the editors to write, review and edit the posts they are looking to publish, so it might take time for them to get to your email. Which is why you shouldn’t expect that they have already read and decided whether your article is right for them after the day it’s finished. You should wait for at least a week before following up with another email.

Accepting Other’s Guest Posts

If you go further down the line and build a somewhat successful blog that has a consistent following, you’ll be pitched by other bloggers as well. When that happens, it’s important that you have some strict standards in place and that you ensure that their content will satisfy your audience. These tips might seem similar to the ones I wrote above, only from a blog owner perspective, but they can still improve your framework on guest posting.

Also, the fact that Google doesn’t like guest posts very much is also a factor to take into consideration. A lot of guest posts are spammy and done only as a backlinking strategy. They contain low quality content and plenty of spammy links, which isn’t there with the readers in mind.

A Track Record Of High-Quality Content – You’ll need to affirm that the writer who’s pitching you has great content. If they have a track record of writing awesome guest posts, then you have a major reason to have him/her write a post for you. If not, then you should check out their blog. Because often enough, they don’t even have a track record of writing high-quality content for their own blogs either.

To make it short, here are two major factors you’ll want to consider:

  • Spam – Do a Google search for their name and ensure that they don’t write any spammy content on their own blog or anywhere on the web.
  • Content Quality and Depth – The more work that goes into a post the better. If the writer has really good writing and takes the time to write long and detailed posts on a certain subject, than you have all the more reasons to accept their guest post. You can’t really put too much valuable advice into a 500 word blog posts, so just skip writers if their content doesn’t suit you. A lot of people just reach out to you for a link, but you shouldn’t accept them if they don’t provide you with a high value.

The Content Must Be Unique – The more attention the writer gives to detail, the more reason there is to accept their post. You’ll always want to have a unique take on the subject you’ve built your blog around, so let yourself be picky.  A writer’s content should be at least 1000 words long, written in a unique style and packed with plenty of valuable information. If they want to talk about something you’ve only talked about, that only proves that they didn’t research your site and that they’ll keep on jabbering about the same thing over and over again.

Allow Yourself To Be Picky – The post you accept should be at least a bit better than you have expected. It needs to be great! You have to have some firm standards in place about what kind of posts you accept for your site. Here are a few:

  • The post has to be believable, because if it isn’t the readers won’t care about it. Even if it’s well written, you should never accept a post that doesn’t seem completely valid and believable.
  • The post should fit within your blog’s overall theme and should be compatible with your writing as well. Not to mention that the topics should also be just right for your blog.
  • Their spelling and grammar should be nothing short of perfect. If you see any errors, than you have yourself a surefire way to know that you don’t have to spend any more time talking to the author.

Don’t Give Them Accounts To Your Site – Even though you can create a fresh account that you have control over within seconds it isn’t a smart thing to do. You don’t want a stranger to just log into your site and post from it. They might meddle with your old blog posts, add shady links or do other harmful things. They should just send you the post they’ve written in a Word file and that’s it. Don’t give them more control than you have to.

But if you really want to give accounts to your guest bloggers, make sure you limit their control as much as possible. They should only have the ability to save their content as a draft and you should be the one to decide when their post gets published.

Make Sure You Own The Content You Get – Even though you received the content piece, there is a chance that the writer will reuse it on their own site. You can let the writer include a link to their blog or their social media page, that’s all fine. But if they end up flipping the article, that might be an issue. Google doesn’t like duplicates and neither do readers.

Also, if someone else does want to republish the article, then they can just ask you instead of having to reach out to the actual author.

Guest Bloggers Have To Follow Up With Comments and Replies – A guest blogger’s job isn’t done when they wrote their post for you. Once it got popular among your readers, they’ll ask questions in the comment section and will try to engage the author on social media. Once that happens, they’ll have to support your community and further contribute with comments.
