So you are looking to start you own blog, but don’t know how? In this tutorial I will show you step-by-step how to make your own blog and it won’t take more than 15 minutes to get it done.
You don’t need any prior experience in building a website or a blog, just a computer connected to the internet. That’s all! I will try to keep this tutorial as simple as possible and use less geeky expressions, so everyone can understand what I’m talking about.
In the following I will show you the process in 3 easy steps. Generally these are the steps you will have to follow to get started with a WordPress blog.
- Buy a domain and hosting account
- Install and setup WordPress
- Upload content and publish your first post
Looks easy, right? Now let’s start.
Buy a Domain Name and Web Hosting Plan
Probably you thought that you can start your blog for free. That can be done, however I don’t recommend using free serves to create a website. These services are unreliable, can get your blog deleted anytime without any notice and all your hard work and time will be gone. Probably you don’t want this to happen. So let’s see how you can start a blog for cheap.
For the start a shared hosting plan will be just good for your blogging needs. For this purpose I recommend the following hosting providers: eHost (for building a personal or hobby blog) or BlueHost (for professional and business blogging).
In this tutorial I will show you the process of building your blog with BlueHost. I personally host two blogs with BlueHost since 2011 and had no issues with them so far.
To start, click here to sign up with BlueHost and get 35% OFF from their regular price. Beside the discount, which is available through our website, you will also get a free domain name.
Click on the “get started now” button and proceed to the step where you choose a plan. If you want to host only one website, you can opt for the cheaper “starter” plan, however I recommend purchasing the “plus” plan, which is a better option because allows you to host as many websites you want.
On the next page, you will have to choose a domain name. If the domain name you are trying to purchase is already taken, just search for a new name or try another domain extension. Once you found a cool domain, click next to register it for free.
You will be redirected to a secure page, where you will need to insert your personal and billing information. Enter an email address that you have access to, because BlueHost will send you the hosting account details to that email.
Review the package information, select the account plan that fits you the best. Usually if you sign up for a longer period you will get a better price. Take this in consideration. Deselect all additional services, at least for now. You can however keep the domain privacy protection selected, to hide your personal information on domain whois. I highly suggest having a protected domain.
You can pay for your hosting account with a credit card or with PayPal. Choose the payment option you like most.
After reading and agreeing with BlueHost’s terms, click the submit button and wait for the confirmation email.
Install and Setup WordPress to your Website
After successful purchase, you will receive a confirmation email. It should arrive in just few minutes. This email will contain all details (username, password, etc) that are necessary to login to your hosting control panel. Follow the steps described in the email and login to your hosting account.
Once logged in, find the WordPress icon and click it. This will bring you to the MojoMarketplace, which is a tool for automatically installing scripts just like WordPress.
Confirm that you want to install WordPress by clicking the “Install” button.
On the next page, choose the domain you want to install WordPress to. In your case, the domain you just recently registered. This is automatically selected. Leave the “directory” field empty and click “Check Domain” to proceed.
And finally setup your blog’s login details. Click on the advanced options tab, set the name of your website (this can be changed later as well), choose a user name and password. Pick a user that is not “admin” and use a strong password, to protect your blog against hackers. Click the “Install Now” button and wait a moment.
While WordPress is installing you will see the progress bar at the top of the page. Once is finished, click the “Credentials” button that will take you to a page where you will find your blog’s login details.
Upload and Publish your Content
At this stage you are probably at around minute 9 if you have found a domain quickly and if you did not wait too long for the confirmation email. Now login to your blog by following the URL given on the above mentioned page (yourwebsitename.com/wp-admin). Insert your admin user and password and access the back-end interface.
By clinking on the “Posts” menu in the left side of the screen, you will be able to add your first post. Click the “Add New” button to create a post.
The interface of the article editor is very simple. It looks like the image below. You will need to add a title to your post, add some text, upload an image if you want and hit the “Publish” button to make it public on your website.
That’s all! You have published your first blog post with WordPress, in under 15 minutes. Isn’t this amazing?
Probably you will want to configure your blog and maybe change the design of your website. I suggest reading my detailed guide on how to make a WordPress site. This guide describes the process of theme and plugin installation as well the setup of url structure and other tricks. In the my other guide: what to do after installing WordPress, you will find even more information about how to properly setup and optimize your blog.
I challenge you!
Now you should say: “challenge accepted!” and start with the process of making your own personal, hobby or professional blog. Let me know if you where able to publish your first post within 15 minutes.
